Omnicef Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Cefdinir

CEFDINIR (Omnicef®) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It treats many kinds of infections including those of the skin, respiratory tract, sinuses, ears, and urinary tract. It fights bacteria in the body. Omnicef is a member of the family of antibiotics known as cephalosporins.

Omnicef Dosage

  • For adults and adolescents 13 years and over, the maximum daily dose is 600 milligrams, regardless of the infection under treatment.
  • For Throat and Tonsil Infections, 300 milligrams every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days or 600 milligrams once a day for 10 days.
  • If you have Pneumonia, then 300 milligrams every 12 hours for 10 days.

Uses of Omnicef

  • It is used to treat various type of infections including bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, tonsillitis, ear infections, and skin infections.
  • It may also be used for other medical conditions those are listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Omnicef

If you are taking this medication, then discuss the side effects with your doctor. If you feel any change in intensity, then you should tell your doctor. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Omnicef. Side effects may include:

  • Abnormal stools
  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • gas
  • indigestion
  • loss of appetite
  • rash
  • vaginal discharge
  • weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Omnicef:

  • If you suffer from seizures, then you should use Omnicef with caution. If you have a seizure while using Omnicef, then stop taking it and call your doctor immediately.
  • Use Omnicef with caution if you suffer from colitis (inflammation of the bowel). Omnicef may also cause colitis. If you develop symptoms such as diarrhea while taking this medication, then notify your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, including any allergies (especially to penicillin/cephalosporin antibiotics), bowel disease (colitis), kidney disease.
  • You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking certain drugs with Omnicef, then it may decreased, increased or altered the effects of Omnicef medicine. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Omnicef with the following:-

  • Antacids such as Maalox and Mylanta
  • Iron supplements
  • Multivitamins containing iron
  • Probenecid (Benemid)
Overdose

When you are taking Omnicef, and you feel that overdose is suspected then contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a Omnicef overdose may include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal cramps
  • seizures
